A Different Kind of Internship with Speakers for Schools

One of the challenges of promoting diversity in the marcomms space—and specifically in research—is that school students often don’t know about our industry. As a result, they don’t apply for opportunities in this field. This lack of awareness means our industry tends to attract candidates primarily from middle-class, white, and university-educated backgrounds. At Truth Consulting, we want to change this. We recognize the importance of reaching students while they are still in school and exploring career paths. By doing so, we hope to attract more students to consider apprenticeships, as we firmly believe you don’t need a university degree to excel in our field.

To help address this, we partnered with Speakers for Schools, the UK’s leading charity for Social Mobility. The organization works to level the playing field for 11–19-year-olds by providing work experience placements. Through this partnership, we welcomed two students, Nowfa Mohamed and Olivia Cheah, to Truth, where they explored and gained insights into the world of research and strategy.

Our goal with this initiative was to give the students an opportunity to learn new skills, create meaningful work they could be proud of, and collaborate with our team and clients. This partnership aligns with our commitment to driving ED&I (Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion) change in our industry and supports The Market Research Society (MRS) Inclusion Pledge. Learn more here: MRS Inclusion Pledge.

We learned so much from Nowfa and Olivia during their time with us. They brought incredible energy and shared valuable insights through their work and final presentations. From cryptocurrency to how entertainment brands should communicate with young audiences, their contributions were both informative and inspiring.

One of our interns, Nowfa, shared her experience:

"My time at Truth Consulting was nothing short of extraordinary. From day one, I felt like part of a supportive family, diving into meaningful projects like exploring Gen Z’s impact on the financial industry, strategizing member engagement for ICAEW, and helping LEGO connect with teens. Each day brought new challenges, insights, and the chance to make a real impact. It was an unforgettable journey of growth, creativity, and collaboration."

If you haven’t already considered partnering with Speakers for Schools to give students a glimpse into our industry, it’s absolutely worth it for countless reasons. We’re already looking forward to welcoming more students next year!
