Embracing the Unknown at Truth

Daunting. That’s how it initially felt coming into Truth Consulting. My mind was running at 90 mph, asking so many questions. “What if I am not good at this” “What if I make so many mistakes” “What if my introverted self struggles to socialise” “What if I don’t have what it takes to do the work” All these what ifs were racing in my head. The fear of the unknown started to cloud my mind. I am not going to pretend that I suddenly had this surge of confidence and self-belief. What I did do is run to my elder sister several times and she constantly reassured that I will be fine. I sat with that right up until I walked through the doors of Truth Consulting. As always, my sister was right. Everything turned out to be more than fine.

With that being said, I learnt not to be afraid of trying new things. Whether that is entering a new space, meeting new people, trying a new hobby – there is no need to be fearful. Don’t get me wrong fear is a normal and valid human reaction to the unknown but rather than being paralysed by fear, I embraced it. I accepted the fact I don’t know what the future holds and the best thing for me to do is to make the most out of it!

While I have been at Truth, one thing that has amazed me are the people. The simplest way to describe working at Truth is like being surrounded by knowledgeable wizards! The last time I felt like that was probably my first lesson of A-Level Maths. Let’s just say you could not pay me enough money to redo that again. Anyways I digress. Being at Truth, has made me realise how amazing we are as humans. Every human on this planet, has a uniqueness and slight quirkiness to them that makes them who they are. It’s those quirks that allow us to stand out and just be, authentically. At truth, everyone is being themselves while working together in harmony to conduct impactful work. It’s incredibly beautiful to see in this day and age where there is so much conflict and discourse in the world.

My time at truth so far has definitely been an eye opener into the world of strategic insights. Throughout the first couple of weeks, I was given the opportunity to meet colleagues from junior consultants to directors within Truth. Within these discussions, I gained invaluable advice on starting a career within the industry. One particular advice from Taiye that stood out to me was, “you are meant to be here, you are in this room for a reason, you earned it so move accordingly”. It’s so easy to fall into feeling like an imposter starting out in a junior position but truly it is just an opportunity to be a student and learn from those who have gone before you.

As well as being a student, I wanted to ensure I was getting involved in projects and making an impact! I have been able to support projects within the alcoholic beverage and fashion industry. Across both of these projects, I was able to:

  • manage the recruitment process

  • design pre-task activities

  • take in detail fieldwork notes

  • support with analysis

  • curate visuals for debrief decks

Being able to support from the very beginning of the project lifecycle to the very end has helped better my understanding of how research is conducted for commercial use. I aim to continue to build on that understanding and take more responsibility in future projects.

I look forward to being apart of projects where I am constantly learning new things and growing as an individual. It is a never ending journey of growth and evolution!
